Spotlight Case Study: Prototype to Production Aerospace Machining
A leading OEM in the aerospace industry approached our team with a critical component with an original design that made it inherently difficult and costly to manufacture. As the company was looking to reduce costs and weight, it required an experienced company with advanced CNC machining services capable of rapid prototyping and designing for manufacturability before transitioning into full production.
The experienced team at King Precision Solutions took the provided part and used their reverse engineering capabilities to digitally rebuild the part in modernized software. This allowed them to better understand the design and make meaningful improvements, including suggesting a higher-performance and lower-weight material ideal for applications in the aerospace industry. Furthermore, King Precision Solutions devised unique fixturing to hold the workpiece that allowed for more intricate machining that reduced weight without compromising structural integrity. By working through several prototype iterations, all displayed and communicated back to the customer, King Precision developed a final product that exceeded all customer expectations for final weight, tolerances, quality, and above all else, turnaround time and costs.
King Precision Solutions was able to use its CNC machining experience and added engineering assistance capabilities to significantly reduce component weight while simultaneously enhancing strength by selecting the optimal material. To measure part tolerances and ensure they fall within the specified range, all parts are examined using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and calibrated hand tools and toolmakers’ microscopes to ensure precision and traceability. Our routing system tracks and stores all material certifications, heat treat certifications, and plating certifications on every project that enters our facility with each report made available to the customer upon request.
